At Mairehau we have vertical form time at the beginning of the day. We call this time Wā Whānau time.
Wā Whānau time creates a sense of hapori (community) within our school.
Time spent in Wā Whānau assists the development of relationships and mentoring between our year levels, creates connections for Mairehau kaimahi and ākonga, and offers opportunity for ākonga leadership throughout our school.
What is the purpose of Wā Whānau?
There is strong research to show the benefits of vertical pastoral systems when supporting ākonga through their schooling experience.
Wā Whānau sessions are designed to:
Support ākonga in developing relationships
Provide reflection and goal setting support
Provide ākonga mentoring opportunities
Support the development of ākonga leadership attributes
