It is with a heart full of profound gratitude, deep emotion, and a touch of sadness that I write to share a significant milestone with you all. After nearly 22 incredible years as the Principal of Mairehau High School, I have made the difficult decision to step down from my role, effective from the beginning of the 2027 school year.
Deciding to step away from a school that has been my home, my purpose, and my passion for over two decades has been one of the hardest choices of my life, but I know in my heart that the time is right.
Reflecting on Our Journey
To serve as your Principal has been an absolute privilege. Together, we have nurtured a community rich in history, deeply rooted in culture, and unapologetically committed to meaningful learning. My entire career has been driven by an unwavering passion for people, and watching generations of students walk through our gates, discover their potential, and grow into confident individuals has brought me a level of joy that words cannot fully capture.
Before coming to Mairehau, my leadership journey was shaped during my time as Principal of Flaxmere College. The lessons and beliefs in young people I gained there became the very foundation upon which I sought to lead here, allowing me to serve this community with a full heart.
This journey has never been mine alone. I have been extraordinarily blessed to work alongside an incredibly gifted, dedicated, and resilient staff whose tireless commitment inspires me daily. I am also deeply grateful for the rich collaborations with our neighbouring schools and colleagues within the Canterbury West Coast Secondary Principals Association.
The Next Chapter: Whānau always comes first
School leadership requires deep sacrifice, and over the years, my perspective on where I am needed most has shifted. It is now time for me to step into my most important role yet—to simply be a grandfather and husband.
I feel a profound calling to dedicate myself to my moko, to build a deep, lasting relationship with them, and to weave myself into the fabric of their childhood. Equally, I am eager to return home to my wife, who has been my rock and anchor through every triumph and challenge of this demanding role. I look forward to spending quality, uninterrupted time with her and providing the unwavering support to my whānau that they have so selflessly given to me for 40 beautiful years.
Looking Forward
Thank you for trusting me to lead this magnificent school. While my time as your Principal will come to an end, my belief in this community will never fade. I will leave with memories that I will treasure for the rest of my days, secure in the knowledge that Mairehau High School’s heart beats strong, and its future remains exceptionally bright.
