The Mairehau Way - Well-being comes first
Mairehau High School has recently had a focus on enhancing the well-being needed for students to become successful learners.
Mairehau High School's charter and strategic plan outlined learning and well-being as two fundamental components that need to be in harmony for students to become engaged with learning and to achieve their full potential. Educational leaders at our school looked to evidence-based research and recognised that any changes to the way we do things at our school had to be long-term, incremental, and sustainable within our budget and mandate as a school. To this end, a new initiatives was developed to address the specific needs of our student and the position of Well-being Co-ordinator was created in 2006.
The role of Well-being Co-ordinator involves working with individual students, alongside our Pastoral team, to address the emotional, social, and other well-being needs of our students. Our Well-being Co-ordinator's primary role is to work with individual Year 9 and 10 students to assist them in making a smooth and positive transition to high school. Our Well-being Co-ordinator also oversees well-being programmes targeted at specific groups of students at our school.
An example of an initiative supported by our Well-being Co-ordinator has been the development of a plan to create a Smoke-Free student culture at Mairehau High School. Working with small groups of students, including our school's hip-hop dance group, as well as community resource people such as our Public Health Nurse, our Well-being Co-ordinator has put together a series of well-being initiatives that will help make being Smoke-Free 'cool' for our students.

Mission Statement
For all students to value themselves and others; to know they can achieve, and to reach their fullest potential.
