2010 Sport
Mairehau High School has traditionally been a strong sporting school with a rich history producing many top athletes over the years. Sport is always encouraged at the school; whether through lunch time activities, trainings, tournaments or inter–secondary school competitions. We have enthusiastic, generous and professional staff members who act as coaches and/or managers for our many sports teams. We have a high percentage of students involved in sport all over the Canterbury region and quite often the country. We have a great number of volunteers who help with the general running of sport at the school, without such generous commitment we wouldn’t be able to produce such high levels of participation and involvement in sport.
Here at Mairehau High School we also have close ties with local clubs and especially the wider school community which has always supported our sporting commitments and achievements. Our sporting links stretch abroad to the likes of the United States where one of our ex–pupils is currently on a rugby scholarship to an American University, and one of our senior students will try out for a Salt Lake City rugby team later this season. The highland rugby team (Highland High School- Salt Lake City- Utah) where our student is trialling has the best High School rugby team in all of the US (they have won the National Title 16 times), so some our students' sporting talent and prowess is world class.
Last year our Senior Boys basketball team were Division 1 champions and represented the school admirably, they are on course to do the same again this year. Our first fifteen also did very well last season by finishing second in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Development Grade. Last year we had 14 winter sports teams involved in Wednesday, Friday & Saturday competitions on a inter–secondary school and club level.
We have a vast number of sports that are on offer here at Mairehau High School:
The Summer Sports that are played include:
Athletics, Bowls, cricket, croquet, cross country, cycling, disability sport, equestrian, futsal, golf, gymnastics, summer hockey, indoor netball, korfball, mountain biking, multi sport, orienteering, petanque, road race, rowing, softball, squash, surfing, swimming and diving, tee ball, tennis, ten pin bowling, touch, volleyball, water polo.
The Winter Sports that are played include:
AFL, Archery, Badminton, Basketball, football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Ski and Snowboarding, Table Tennis, Martial Arts, Girls Kickboxing and Self Defence.
While being one of only a few schools in the Canterbury region which has a physical disabilities resource centre for its students, here at Mairehau High School we value diversity and inclusion. We have a large range of special Olympic sports on offer to our students with physical and mental disabilities; these include: Special Olympics, swimming, road race, cross country, football, athletics, ten- pin bowling, tee ball, tennis, petanque and archery.
There is never a dull moment at Mairehau High School — we are constantly running lunch time sporting competitions for the whole school. We have just recently finished a fat mat splat competition, & prior to that a lunchtime touch tournament was run, cool prizes were on offer and even a staff team entered to keep it interesting and competitive for the students. A lunchtime indoor soccer tournament is kicking off at the moment in the gymnasium and we have had huge involvement from the students already.
Sporting Achievements are always recognised at our school through prizegivings, trophies/ certificates, representation in Canterbury and sometimes national events & tournaments, or even just through added support and training.
Whether in the classroom, on the court or playing field, like our Mission Statement states, our students respect and value themselves and others, they know they can achieve (and do so), and they strive to reach their fullest potential on every occasion. You don't have to be a top level athlete to participate and play sport at Mairehau High School. We greatly value your involvement and participation whether you are able–bodied or otherwise. Every one of our students respects our school motto and crest and wears it with pride whether they are involved in competitive or social sporting competition.
We look forward to seeing you involved in Mairehau School Sport in the near future.
