Special Programmes

Year 9 Orientation

Early in the year, members of each class spend time getting to know each other and their Form teacher so they can quickly learn to work as a cohesive group.
Communication skills, including learning to listen, are practised and developed throughout the year.

Learning Support

In Year 9, learning support courses are offered in numeracy and literacy for students who are achieving below the expected standard.

GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)

Extension opportunities for students who are able to perform at a high academic level will be offered.

Peer Support

The Peer Support programme aims to provide security and friendship to Year 9 students while they adapt to Mairehau High School life. Year 13 students meet a small group of Year 9 students once a week (during Term One). Through this structured programme Year 9 students develop communication and leadership skills and an awareness of their own abilities.

Te Reo/Tikana Maori

The school is committed to teaching the Maori Language up to Year 13. We value the work being done by the Maori Culture Whanau and the support of parents and the community in providing assistance for these students. We are continuing to examine ways in which to include the Maori dimension in the total curriculum.

Adult Students/Part-time Students

We welcome adults at day school classes. Anyone who has left secondary school and feels it may be beneficial to return should not hesitate to make an appointment to see the Principal.
Adult students can be full-time or part-time. They may take any subject listed in the Subject Choice Table at any level, and they may take subjects at more than one level at a time.
School students may also study part-time if they leave school and wish to continue at least one subject. A student taking four subjects is advised to re-enrol as a full-time student.
