PTA
Presidents Report 2009
Many thanks must go to the committee members of the PTA who have supported Mairehau High School throughout 2008. Our attendance at the production, speech competitions , fashion show, open night, Y10 NCEA evening, music evening and Senior Awards evening, where we provide supper is always appreciated by staff and students. These evenings also allow us to see the great positive things that we know Mairehau High School can and DOES deliver. We continue to maintain a close liaison with the school with regular attendances at the PTA meetings from a management representative. These meetings bring us up to speed on the happenings outside our day to day running of the PTA and enable us to offer assistance for various projects.
While we still continue to discuss new and various possibilities of accruing funds, the tuckshop has been our main means of income. Providing healthy nutritious food in compostable packaging, though ideal, has not always produced a profit. Other factors of the lower school role, students going off site, location of the tuckshop, perceived lack of variety and perceived lack of value for money have all contributed to a less than healthy bank balance. Discussion with senior management has provide us with a more modern accounting system that will help track our progress more accurately through the next 6 months. The Nutrition Fund has enabled us to purchase major appliances and with the relaxation of the Healthy Food Policy and the ongoing implementation of more "student friendly" food we hope to have the Tuckshop in a position where we can once again direct our profits directly back to Mairehau High School.
At the end of 2008 Vera Stockdale resigned to dedicate more time to her ailing mother. We are very grateful for her dedication and amazing commitment over the last 28 years. We welcome Jackie Battarbee as the new Manager and will work closely with her in implementing the new initiatives.
We have managed a few extra fundraising activities in 2008 with raffles, book sales and catering services to the school. This has enabled us to provide the homework centre with snack food , the music department with the purchase of guitars and also the basketball team with their travel expenses. We also purchased two art works to showcase the success of two former Mairehau High School pupils who have graduated from the Fine Arts School.
2009 could be a challenging year for the PTA as many of the members near the end of their relationship with the school. I hope that we can encourage new members to ensure that there will always remain a Mairehau High School PTA.

General Business:
We have been advised by the Charities Commission that the wording of our constitution is not correct in one clause regarding the winding up of the PTA. After discussion it was moved that “ The Constitution of the Mairehau High School PTA be amended so that clause 13.2 will now read ‘ shall be given or transferred to some other charitable organisation or body having objects similar to the objects of the first organisation, or to some other charitable organisation or purpose, within New Zealand’”
Moved: Tania 2nd: Marianne Carried
Tania to write letters to the Patron and Vice Patrons enclosing the Presidents Report and requesting that they once again agree to hold their positions for 2009.
Due to the fact that next year the PTA will have only 4 members at the most, Tania to ask Richard Besley and Anne Shave to suggest parents that may be approached to join the PTA.
